Episode 6: David Goodhart - The Road to Somewhere
In 'The Road to Somewhere', David Goodhart argues that decades of greater economic and cultural openness in the West have antagonised many people who do not share the same values as those in political power. He argues that this is behind the rise of populist politics that accounts for Donald Trump and Brexit. Abandoning the old divisions of Left and Right, David believes that a better way to describe the division is between between the mobile ‘achieved’ identity of the people from Anywhere, and the marginalised, roots-based identity of the people from Somewhere.
In this interview, we discuss the politics of the Somewheres and the Anywheres, and the impact of the expansion of higher education (interview edited very lightly for length).
David Goodhart is the founding editor of Prospect magazine, current head of the Demography, Immigration and Integration Unit at the think tank Policy Exchange, and previously director of the centre-left think tank Demos.
